First of all, don't be afraid! You can't do anything disastrous, because it's backed up. And we have loads of storage space - 5 gigs as of 2/9/07.
Wikis are great because it's easy to make a page or add something. However, if they aren't well organized, people won't be able to find things. The sidebar is a finding tool, but it can't list every page. The pages on the sidebar should be the main pages for their part of the site (like ARB, Neighborhood Watch, Tree Authority Board). When you open those links, you should find links to more material about that subject.
The main thing to think about before adding something new is: what part of the site should it be linked to so that people can find it? Should you add it on an existing page or create a new page? Adding on to an existing page is easiest, if you can find a page that seems right for what you want to post.
When you add something, especially comments, please tell people who you are, even if it's just your first name
Making new pages
If you want to make a new page, don't use the new page tab! Figure out which page your new page should be linked to, open the edit tab for that page, type in the title of your new page, highlight it, and then click link on the toolbar. The default is "new page", and it will show the text you've entered. Click OK.
Now you are back on the page where the link is. Save the page.
Click on the link you just created which brings up a form which allows you to choose a template (most of them don't apply to us) and click "Create new page" at the bottom.
That will bring up you new page, ready for you to add content. You can add text, pictures, links to external sites, and links to more new wiki sites you intend to create.
There's one rule PBWiki insists on: do not upload copyrighted material. Anything that's already on the internet is copyrighted, even if it doesn't say so. You can provide a link to it, but please don't copy it in. For example, you find a picture of a building you really like, describe it and why you like it and make a link.
There are some pages that are locked, and only a moderator can change them. These are mostly pages with City documents, including the ARB agendas and minutes. Because these are records of things that have already happened and of official city documents, they hae to saty as they are. If you have comments about the minutes of a meeting you attended please email the administrator.
If you do create a page and can't find it later, scroll to the bottom of any page and click on "Show all pages."
Uploading files
If you have an existing file you'd like to add, open the Files tab. We have gigs of storage left, so don't worry about running out of space.
You can place a link to one of these files on any page in the wiki:
Uploaded files can be linked to in the same way as everything else--you'll just need the file's location (URL). You can find a list of all the files you have uploaded to your wiki by selecting the 'Files' link at the top or bottom of the page. While there, right-click on a file link to copy its URL.
